W18_SSG_Resource Leveling

PROBLEM DEFINITION

Having developed the cost baseline profile based on Week 16 CPM schedule, I find that resource allocation is not preferable where the resource is so demanding in the beginning and the end of the course. I prefer the time allocation is more “flat” on weekly basis.

DEVELOPMENT OF FEASIBLE ALTERNATIVES

One of the method to distribute the resource over the training course is by doing resource leveling. The idea is to shift some activities which has free float to be executed in different time over the course duration.

Primavera Project Management P6 V.7 has capabilities to exercise resource leveling and the writer use it accordingly to perform resource leveling.

DEVELOPMENT OF OUTCOMES FOR EACH ALTERNATIVE

Activities that potentially to be shifted is the activities which has free float and activities that potentially shifted without changing the final completion dates. On this exercise, writer will shift the activities A1180, A1200, A1210, and A1220 forward and A1150 backward. Those activities do not part of the critical path, so it shall not affect the finish date. Expected that maximum weekly cost shall be <= 50 hours per week or US$ 10,000 / week.

SELECTION OF CRITERIA

Having put all the activities and to Primavera, It shows that the training preparation start on August 26 and project to be completed on February 14, 2014. The cost profile  is developed from the expected hours of each activities x unit rate (US$ 200 / hour).

Figure 3. Resource utilization during the course BEFORE Leveling

Figure 4. Resource utilization during the course AFTER Leveling

ANALYSIS FOR THE ALTERNATIVES

Based on the above after leveling cost profile, it shows that by leveling resource, cost profile can be change and it reflects the new cost utilization versus time. The leveling process shall not change the course finish dates. During the Distance Learning to the end of the course, it showed that maximum cost per week is less than US$ 10,000.

SELECTION ON THE PREFERRED ALTERNATIVES

By using the maximum cost per week is US$ 10,000  or 50 hours, the target shall be “achieveable”.

PERFORMANCE MONITORING AND POST EVALUATION RESULT

The leveling process is one of the method that can be used to spread the resource over the course period without affecting the finish date. This tool is effective in relation with the resource management. Once actual performance is recorded, this we will monitor this resource leveling again and we will re-do resource leveling once needed.

  1. AWESOME posting, Pak Setiyo!!! And I am very pleased to see you referencing GAO’s “Scheduling Best Practices” guide, which is, IMPO, one of the single best references on scheduling I have ever seen written.

Plenty of books on teaching the forward pass/backwards pass but very few books actually tell you how to USE the schedule.

    Keep up the great work!!!
