W4_APE_Comparing Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi

  1. Problem Definition

Recently I have a discussion with my friends for the latest hot new for Gareth Bale transfer to Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur in worth of 100 Million Euros[1]. With this value Gareth Bale is now the most expensive player in the world. One of my friend had an argument that this action is only for business strategy for Madrid since the Bale’s performances far away compare to other players in La Liga’s such as Cristiano Ronaldo or CR7 and Lionel Messi or Messiah (they both are the 1st and 2nd best players in the world). So according to him the purchasing event will not make Real Madrid as La Liga Winner, and added fact that other valuable players such as Mesut Ozil leave to Arsenal. Then is it true that Gareth Bale better than CR7 or Messi ?

  1. Identify the Feasible Alternative

I understand that one of my friends is idols for Gareth Bale and other for Messi. For me CR7 is the best due to his productivity so far for Real Madrid. In order to get polite with my friends, I will use available data from the web[2]and use qualitative method to compare. Other reason also I don’t have reference for players productivity since the limit to produce goals or provide assists is up to sky limit.

  1. Development of the Outcome for Alternative

First, I compose the raw data and produce parameters as follow:

Figure 2a

Figure 2b

Figure 2c

Figure 2 Bale, Ronaldo & Messi Raw Data

 Figure 3

Figure 3 Main Parameters to Compare

From main parameter listed on Figure 3 then I developed key items and compare it using dominance and lexicography models[3]. The result present in Figure 4 as present hereinafter:

  1. Selection Criteria

It is interesting to see Gareth Bale key performance compare to Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi since they are now the most “celebrities player” in Spain La Liga.

  1. Analysis and Comparison of the Alternative

It is appears from statistic data that Gareth Bale performance is less than CR7 or Messi (the production goals, assists, club trophies, acknowledgement and the market value). Gareth Bale maybe in average play for 93% time of soccer game as winger and striker but no goals on it. In other hand CR7 and Messi with less than 90% running in their play but can contribute at least one goal per match. Then why Real Madrid awarded higher transfer fee of Gareth Bale compare to CR7 or Messi ? For the record, Barcelona probably the luckiest club in the world since they paid nothing for Messi but in return will get 120 M-Euros if they sell Messi now.

  1. Selection of the Preferred Alternative

I have my conclusion that Gareth Bale transfer fee is not equal worth of his performance according to my friend opinion.

  1. Performance Monitoring and the Post Evaluation of Result

If we consider these world “celebrity players” as stocks then probably the purchasing of Gareth Bale is one of Real Madrid strategy to lift their club value in stock markets. But in my humble opinion their risk is too high now since public opinion already had been pushed by previous drama regarding this transfer. If Gareth Bale doesn’t performs on games with Real Madrid, then his price rapidly will go down, and i am sure the big pressure on his shoulder now.

  1. AWESOME Pak Arif!!! I LOVE it!!! Very imaginative and yet very appropriate demonstration that you know and understand how to use Multi Attribute Decision Making!!!

The ONLY fine point I want to make is that in order to make it easy to claim credit for BOTH your Blog posting AND one of your problems from Engineering Economy, next time be sure to include the appropriate CHAPTER and specific PAGES.

Other than that, this is an excellent case study and I enjoyed reading it.
